In 1992 Prof Evans moved to the University of Melbourne to take up the position of Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, which he held until 1996.  At the University he has also been Research Leader for the Co-operative Research Centre Sensor Signal and Information Processing (CSSIP CRC) until 2000 and Director of the DSTO Centre of Excellence in Networked Decision Systems (CENDS) until 2004.  From 2004 to 2012 he was Director of the National ICT Australia Victoria Research Laboratory (NICTA VRL), while in 2013 he was Research Group Leader for NICTA’s Control and Signal Processing research program.  Currently Prof Evans is Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Melbourne, an appointment he took up in 2013.

Prof Evans has worked extensively with industry in Australia and overseas during the last 40 years and has been heavily involved with the development of a number of products for industry.  These include radar systems for defence, the development of variable speed AC drives and the development of star and satellite servo tracking systems for large antennae now installed in many countries.

Prof Evans is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (FAA), a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (FTSE), a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, USA (FIEEE), and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia (FIEAust).
