Our ability to collect and store data outweighs our ability to interpret its message in a timely manner, especially if situational awareness and operational analysis are the desired outcomes. However tools exist to turn big data into the patterns and pictures the human brain is far better at understanding and surprisingly they are available to industry and other users via most publically funded research organisation in Australia. The DSI and the University of Technology, Sydney will be presenting a case study of the ability of Australian Academics to model real-life maritime traffic data in an attempt to detect anomalies and display complex data in an easy to comprehend form.
